Introduction to Management Buy-Ins

An MBI involves an experienced management team acquiring an existing business, usually with the backing of external financing. The MBI team may often be combined with members of the existing management team of the company being acquired known as a BIMBO.

Although not as common as MBOs, MBIs  & BIMBOS, they are an important way of changing ownership.  MBI candidates have to be realistic about the amount of work needed to identify and acquire a business.

The MBI team have to put in place:

Find the target to buy
Approach and agree a deal
Raise finance
Complete due diligence
Restructure the acquired company
Keep existing management and staff on board
Create the planned value

Experienced advisers can help you through this process.

Take the Opportunity

If you are a manager with an MBI opportunity now or in the future or are considering selling your business where a management buy in may be an option, take the following steps:

Register as an MBI candidate by on the MBI//Int/NEDs Home page.
Go and see an adviser.  They will usual meet you at no charge to discuss your options, whether an MBI is achievable, the key issues, how to find an opportunity and the steps to take.
Do some background reading to understand the basics so the meeting can be more about your specific issues.

Search for an adviser by clicking the quick links above. Refine your search to select advisers in your region who advise on your transaction size. Use the key word function to select an adviser with specific experience i.e. if you are in printing type "print" in the keyword search. This will identify advisers who have identified printing as a speciality, recorded a deal involving printing or have print mentioned elsewhere in their directory entry.

If you are experienced or have an agreed deal you can search for finance in the same way.
